Unusual visual loss after snakebite

Abstract: Snakebites are endemic in some parts of Thailand, being associated with several complications. Ocular disturbances are uncommon, except in cases of corneal or conjunctival injury, when the eye is directly exposed to the snake venom. The present study presents a case of combined ophthalmic artery occlusion and transient central retinal artery occlusion with macular ischemia after a Russell's viper bite.

“…Other complications may include optic neuritis, globe necrosis, and retinal degeneration . Reports of ophthalmic manifestations after viperine snakebites in humans include subconjunctival hemorrhage, hyphema, uveitis, endophthalmitis, glaucoma, vitreous hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhage, central retinal artery occlusion, macular infarction, and blindness secondary to cortical infarction . To the authors' knowledge, despite several papers describing the systemic and local manifestation of snakebite envenomation in dogs, there have been no reports of ocular abnormalities in those cases.…”

“…This leads to formation of fibrin cross links, which are promptly lysed by the fibrinolytic system. 13 Eventually this leads to disseminated Intravascular coagulation and coagulopathy that can cause sub-conjunctival and intraocular haemorrhage. Anterior uveitis following snake bite has been reported uncommonly.…”
