Effect of lipstick on composite resin color at different application times

Abstract: ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the contact of two lipsticks, one with common fixer and one with ultra fixer, on the color of a composite resin immediately, 30 min and 24 h after photoactivation. Material and methodsNinety specimens were prepared with a composite resin, Filtek-Z350. Specimens were polished and divided into 9 groups (n=10) according to time elapsed after photoactivation (A- immediately; B- 30 min; C- 24 h) and the contact with lipstick (UF- lipstick with ultra f… Show more

“…Visual perception was in accordance with results obtained by device, as occurred in the present work . Galvão and collaborators (2010) and Abidi and collaborators (2014) used the CIELAB system to evaluate the influence on the colour of two lipsticks formulation made of composite resin employed on dental procedure . The authors concluded that the instrumental evaluation reduced the potential error on colour analysis compared to visual methods and increased the reliability of measure.…”

“…According to Bagheri et al, 5 if the composite is able to absorb water, then it is also capable of absorbing other fluids, resulting in its discoloration 17 and in the reduction of its mechanical properties due to polymer matrix degradation. 18 Fluid absorption occurs mainly as direct absorption in the resin matrix.…”

“…Some of the intrinsic factors studied are resin matrix composition, 5-8 filler particles, 9 photo-initiator and inhibitor, 10 polymerisation degree, 11 and quantity of opacifiers. 12 On the other hand, a few of the extrinsic factors that have been considered are staining substances in contact with composite resin restorations, 9,13 ultraviolet radiation, 8 temperature changes, 14 and beverages. 9,15 Although a reasonable number of researchers have published studies on the performance of silorane-based composites (SBC), 1,16-18 the majority of them have focused on the mechanical properties.…”
