Staining and calculus formation after 0.12% chlorhexidine rinses in plaque-free and plaque covered surfaces: a randomized trial

Abstract: ObjectivesStudies concerning side effects of chlorhexidine as related to the presence of plaque are scarce. The purpose of this study was to compare the side effects of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) on previously plaque-free (control group) and plaque-covered surfaces (test group).MethodsThis study had a single-blind, randomized, split-mouth, 21 days-experimental gingivitis design, including 20 individuals who abandoned all mechanical plaque control methods during 25 days. After 4 days of plaque accumula… Show more

“…Previous studies presented that chemical agents such as alkaline peroxide, alkaline hypochlorite, chlorhexidine, and disinfectant in denture cleanser and mouthwash can reduce dental plaque and the number of oral pathogens, significantly (6,7). However, long use of these agents can cause some defects in oral cavity such as certain adverse effects (8), increasing of tooth staining, and calculus formation (9). Moreover, changing oral taste can be easily found including bleaching of acrylic resin which is a denture base material (8,9).…”

“…Pojedini čimbenici potiču niz kemijskih reakcija u samoj strukturi zuba i na taj ga način diskoloriraju. S obzirom na uzročnike, razlikujemo endogenu (4 -7) i egzogenu diskoloraciju (8,9).…”

“…A doble blind randomized clinical trial of stains is the lack of dental plaque removal before the use of chlorhexidine. [10] Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate a dentifrice containing chlorhexidine digluconate and zinc acetate used for a period of 60 days, on the development of extrinsic tooth stains. …”
