Conclusions from the symposium: Two decades of ART: success through research

Abstract: Two decades of ART research has served as the catalyst for a new way of thinking about oral health care. It is now necessary to build on the success of ART research by educating existing and future oral health professionals and health decision makers about the benefits of the ART approach. It is also important to build upon the sound research base that already exists on ART even though enough is known about ART to consider it is a reliable and quality approach to control caries. While oral health promotion thr… Show more

“…After 3 years, the overall cumulative tooth-SR was 82%. This result encourages new studies to investigate not only the retention of the restoration but also the retention of the tooth, in view of the first objective of ART, which was to prevent decayed teeth from having to be extracted 1,2 .…”

“…Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) was developed for underserved communities to provide an alternative for preventing decayed teeth from being extracted 1 . For the past twenty years, ART has been one of the most researched minimal intervention approaches for caries management 2 . When compared with traditional restorative procedures, ART is considered a less traumatic and friendlier approach for child populations 3,4 .…”

“…The latest research agenda regarding ART are an excellent example [ 88 ]. In conclusion, as Holmgren and Frencken [ 89 ] stated, ‘ART has served as a catalyst for a new way of thinking about oral health care. While oral health promotion through prevention remains the essential foundation of oral health, the ART approach is an important corner stone in the building of global oral health’.…”

“…Eventually, ART became the most researched technique to search for novel restorative material and minimal intervention approach strategies. [ 2 ] ART not only proved to be easy to perform compared to conventional restorative methods, but it also proved to be less sensitive, less painful, and economical, while producing comparable beneficial results in the maintenance of viable teeth.
