Effects of polishing procedures on color stability of composite resins

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different polishing methods on color stability of posterior, universal and nanohybrid composite resin restorative materials upon exposure to a staining agent. Twenty-five specimens were prepared for each of 5 different composite resins (Filtek Z250, Filtek P60, Quadrant LC, Grandio and Filtek Supreme). Specimens were divided into 5 groups and different polishing procedures, including polishing discs (Pd), polishing discs then diamond polishing paste (P… Show more

“…In this study, Z250 and Renamel specimens showed the least susceptibility to discoloration when immersed in the staining solution, and Filtek Supreme was the most prone to discoloration, this result was in agreement with other studies (Ergucu et al, 2008;Guler et al, 2009). The staining susceptibility of a material may be attributed to its resin matrix and filler type (Monaghan et al, 1992a,b;Ergucu et al, 2008;Guler et al, 2009).…”

“…Although Filtek Supreme, which is a nanofilled composite, has high filler content (78.5% by weight) of aggregated zirconia/silica cluster fillers of 5-20 nm and nonaggregated 20 nm silica fillers, it has high susceptibility to stain. This was noticed in several other studies and it was attributed to porosity in glass filler particles (Ergucu et al, 2008;Guler et al, 2009;Villalta et al, 2006).…”

“…So far, many studies have extensively reported the harmful effects of coffee, tea, grape juice, yerba mate and cola drinks on dental composites. [8][9][10] More recently, other reseachers 4,[11][12][13] reported the color changes promoted by lemon juice, cherry juice, carrot juice, red wine, snow cone syrup and grape drink. However, there are some other important colored foods that are very common in the patient's diet, such as ketchup and mustard, and yet, the effects of these foods on the color of composites have received little attention.…”

“…2 Proper finishing and polishing are important procedures that improve esthetics, maximize patients' oral health and increase the longevity of restoration. 2,3 Staining or discoloration is one of the most common reasons for replacement of composite restorations 4 and most of the published reports document that the finish, surface roughness and surface integrity of the restoration, as well as the physicochemical properties of the material itself can influence plaque adhesion and retention and staining of the composite resin. 5,6 The dental practitioners' knowledge and attitudes toward the oral health care provide the frame work for their professional work.…”
