Transmigration of mandibular second premolar in a patient with cleft lip and palate: case report

Abstract: Disturbances involving abnormalities in tooth eruption are named ectopia. Transmigration is the name assigned to ectopia in the presence of teeth in areas distant from the alveolar process. Initial angulation of the tooth bud of the second premolar and premature loss of permanent mandibular 1st molars can influence the distal migration of the second premolar. Some studies have observed that ectopic teeth can be found in a variety of places around the oral cavity and also in other areas of the human body. There… Show more

“…Yet recently, Kara et al (2011) have encountered two transmigrant laterals and three transmigrant premolars in 90 transmigrant teeth. In other studies, transmigration of a lateral incisor (Camilleri, 2007), a premolar (Alves et al, 2008) and maxillary canines (Aydin & Yilmaz, 2003;Shapira & Kuftinec, 2005) have been detected. Different incidences have been reported in the rate of transmigrant teeth.…”

“…In this study, only 2.2% of mandibular TMs were erupted and only 2.3% of patients with TMs were bilateral. Additionally, a double transmigration as described is obviously most uncommon, and to our knowledge only one case (9) has been previously reported in the literature. In this study, there was a slight overall female predominance, with a male to female ratio of 1:1.41.…”

“…However, the difference in this case was that odontomas were most likely the possible cause of transmigrations. It was accepted that the essential cause of canine migration is generally related to genetic reasons, but the principal causes of migration of premolars are idiopathic or casual (9). The initial angulation of the tooth and early loss of the decidious mandibular molars is important for distal migration of mandibular premolars (14).…”

“…Anomalies in dental eruption are referred to as ectopic, which might be encountered in several regions around the oral cavity [1]. When teeth are grown in areas far from their regular place of development the condition is named migration or transmigration [1,2].…”

“…When teeth are grown in areas far from their regular place of development the condition is named migration or transmigration [1,2]. According to Peck's study, dental migration occurs exclusively in the mandible which refers to the horizontal movement of un-erupted teeth [2].…”
