Evaluation of surgical cavities filled with three types of calcium sulfate

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate histologically, three types of calcium sulfate - Merck (Brazil), Surgiplaster (Italy) and Capset (USA) - in surgically created defects on rabbit femurs. Twenty male New Zealand rabbits were used. Two surgical bone defects (5 mm diameter x 8 mm depth) were created on each distal epiphysis using a #3 Dentoflex trephine bur. Defects were filled with: group 1 - di-hydrated calcium sulfate (Merck); group 2 - Capset (Lifecore-USA); group 3 - Surgiplaster (Classimport-Italy); gro… Show more

“…The purified raw material of calcium sulfate dihydrate for medical application is inexpensive. Furthermore, the material has to be sterilized by a suitable method, such as gamma radiation at 25 kGy, before use in surgical procedure . Therefore, this can reduce the cost of treatment, which gives patients greater opportunity for proper treatment.…”

“…5,[13][14][15] Another form of calcium sulfate that has been demonstrated for regenerative capacity in animal models is calcium sulfate dihydrate. 16,17 Calcium sulfate dihydrate has shown promise as a resorbable barrier in a socket preservation and guided bone regeneration. 18,19 The purified raw material of calcium sulfate dihydrate for medical application is inexpensive.…”

“…Calcium sulfate has been used in medicine and dentistry for more than 100 years and has been proven to be a biocompatible material [3]. It has been extensively studied in numerous animal models and has been shown to allow bone tissue growth in osseous defects [6] with timely resorption of the calcium sulfate [3,16]. When used as a bone graft, calcium sulfate has been shown to result in new bone formation in human extraction sockets after 3 months [17].…”

“…Dessa forma o uso de enxertos ósseos pode colaborar com o processo de reparo. Na presença de enxertos ósseos, o mecanismo reparador descrito se desenvolve normalmente, desde que o material utilizado não seja citotóxico (PECORA, et al, 1997;AABOE, et al, 2000;APAYDIN;TORABINEJAD, 2004;BETTI, 2004;MAEDA, et al, 2007).…”
