Evaluation of the reproducibility of two techniques used to determine and record centric relation in angle's class I patients

Abstract: The centric relation is a mandibular position that determines a balance relation among the temporomandibular joints, the chew muscles and the occlusion. This position makes possible to the dentist to plan and to execute oral rehabilitation respecting the physiological principles of the stomatognathic system. The aim of this study was to investigate the reproducibility of centric relation records obtained using two techniques: Dawson’s Bilateral Manipulation and Gysi’s Gothic Arch Tracing. Twenty volunteers (14… Show more

“…Swenson et al [ 3 ] recorded CR using five different techniques such as tongue tip to soft palate, chin point guidance, leaf gauge, bimanual manipulation, and Roth Power Bite, at five different time points and concluded that all the five techniques were highly repeatable with very small range of variations. Paixão et al [ 24 ] investigated the reproducibility of Dawson's bilateral manipulation and Gysi's Gothic arch tracing CR registration techniques in healthy individuals who presented Angle's Class I occlusion. They found that the Gysi's Gothic arch tracing was more accurate compared to the bilateral manipulation.…”

“…This strong consistency might be the result of a better subject "deprogramming" procedure prior to the CR record registration. Numerous scientific publications (21,26,32,(33)(34)(35)(36) have pointed out that bimanual mandibular manipulation with anterior deprogrammer is one of the most reliable and reproducible methods of determining CR in dentistry. However, there are also scientific publications that oppose this finding, as the one conducted by Paixão et al (37).…”

“…The accuracy and reproducibility of CR and recording materials have been studied in the dental literature with varying results 18–41 . Grasso and Sharry 18 evaluated the reproducibility of the Gothic arch tracings on dentate subjects over a 29‐day period.…”
