Correlation study of plaque and gingival indexes of mothers and their children

Abstract: This study aimed to compare the periodontal condition between plaque and gingival indexes in 30 pairs of mother and child with mixed dentition, as well as to correlate the findings with some of their social and oral hygiene habits. Mother's and child's plaque and gingival indexes were recorded during clinical examination. Periapical and bitewing radiographs were taken in order to assess the presence of any pathologic bone loss. Questionnaires answered by the mothers were used to collect information regarding t… Show more

“…Familylevel characteristics affect both the child-level factors, such as self-care practices and service utilization, and periodontal disease status [50,51]. This is because parents and adolescents share similar cariogenic and periodontal pathogenic microbiota [52,53]. The results of our analyses suggested that sociodemographic characteristics of adolescents' family at 12 years of age, as well as family environment, were important determinants of the occurrence of gingival bleeding and calculus in adolescents.…”

“…The results showed that gingivitis is associated with poor oral hygiene, as demonstrated in previous studies [9,10], and that there is a biological gradient for the oral hygiene variable in individuals with developmental disabilities similar to that for dental caries [17]. Another study did not show this association [7].…”

“…Gingivitis is associated with mouth breathing and dry mouth [8], oral hygiene [9,10]. age [11], dental caries [5,12], the use of medication, [12] different diagnoses of cerebral palsy [4], asthma and the medications used to treat it [13], and male gender [5].…”

“…The presence of pathogenic plaques, together with host-related factors that modify the response to plaque bacteria, is the key determinant contributing to development of the disease [11]. The role of dental plaque as the primary etiological agent in gingivitis has been demonstrated in classic studies of experimental gingivitis in adults and children [13].
