RESUMO ABSTRACTCimentos de ionômero de vidro; Selantes de fossas e fi ssuras; Tratamento restaurador atraumáti co.Glass ionomer cements; Pit and fi ssures sealants; Dental atraumati c restorati ve treatment. Introducti on: Glass ionomer cements (GIC) have undergone remarkable changes in their compositi on, such as the additi on of metallic ions or resin components to their compositi on, which contributed to improve their physical properti es and increased their use as a restorati ve material of great clinical applicability. Objecti ve: To perform a systemati c review about the publicati ons on the use of this material in denti stry and off er informati on to health professionals with respect the use of GIC, addressing the aspects of these material that are evaluated.
DESCRITORES KEYWORDS
Method:The publicati ons used in this review were retrieved from a search in online databases -Medline (Internati onal Health Science Literature), BBO (Brazilian Dental Bibliography), and Scopus -for the period between 2000 and 2008, using the term glass ionomer cements in Portuguese and English.
Conclusion:The arti cles analyzed showed a sati sfactory clinical behavior of GIC when used in restorati ons, atraumati c restorati ve treatment (ART) and as pit-and-fi ssure sealants, showing for these three applicati ons good retenti on, marginal adaptati on and durability, low deteriorati on and low failure rate within periods longer than 1 year. The clinical success of GIC has been reported by several authors who affi rm that this material has a highly relevant role in dental practi ce. It was observed a tendency towards a standardizati on of the studies that evaluate the use of glass ionomer cements for restorati ons, ART and sealing of pit and fi ssures, which facilitates the comparati ve analysis of the studies.
