Comparison of different methods for the occlusal dentine caries diagnosis

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of in-vitro methods for the occlusal dentine caries diagnosis. Thirty-eight sites were evaluated on third molars without macroscopic carious cavitation in adult individuals from the city of Barretos (SP), Brazil. Visual inspection (VI), endoscopic evaluation (AcuCam), visual inspection and blunt-tipped exploratory probes (Tactile), conventional bite-wing radiographs (CR), direct bite-wing digital radiograph (DR), and direct digital radiograph with contrast… Show more

“…It is a highly subjective method. This needs a significant experience and, even so, the sensitivity of the method varies from 0.30 to 0.80 and its specificity from 0.70 to 0.90 [13,17,18]. The combination of a visual and a tactile examination leads to more accurate diagnosis, but again the practitioner could be misled: on the one hand, the 'sticking' of the dental explorer could be due to anatomic structures and, on the other hand, the probe might not 'stick' when the so-called 'hidden caries' or fluoride syndrome is present.…”

“…The three modalities had almost the same values for the areas under the ROC curves. Previous studies showed that digital radiographs had similar diagnostic accuracy to that of conventional radiographs in the detection of caries [9,13,14]. In addition, the interobserver agreement was similar between conventional and digital radiographs [13].…”

“…Mestriner et al (27), después de evaluar distintos méto-dos de diagnóstico, concluyeron que los métodos tradicionales, la inspección visual y las radiografías, son efectivos y complementarios en la detección de caries.…”
