Clinical evaluation of dentin hypersensitivity treatment with the low intensity Gallium-Aluminum-Arsenide laser - AsGaAl

Abstract: CLINICAL EVALUATION OF DENTIN HYPERSENSITIVITY TREATMENT WITH THE LOW INTENSITY GALLIUM-ALUMINUM-ARSENIDE LASER -AsGaAlhe dentin hypersensitivity is a painful condition rather prevalent in the general population. There are several ways of treatment for such condition, including the low intensity lasers. The proposal of this study was to verify the effectiveness of the Gallium-Aluminum-Arsenide diode laser in the treatment of this painful condition, using a placebo as control.Materials and methods: Thirty-two p… Show more

“…In a study comparing a 670 nm laser with a placebo light over 6 weeks following six sessions of treatment, a significant reduction from the baseline was reported in both groups, with no significant difference observed between laser treatment and placebo. 22 More recently, Vieira et al 23 compared four sessions of 660 nm laser, 3% potassium oxalate gel, and placebo gel, and showed a similar reduction in sensitivity immediately and after 3 months of follow-up in all study groups, including the placebo group. In contrast, the present study suggests that a 685 nm diode laser has a significant desensitizing effect that is different from the placebo.…”

“…46 In the literature, there are many contradictory studies for the treatment of DH using low-level lasers. 19,22,[47][48][49][50] These differences are caused by the fact that there are various types of lasers and variety in laser parameters. Several other factors could have influenced results, such as surgical extension (number of teeth involved), time required to perform the surgical procedure, gingival inflammation grade, and number and severity of periodontal pockets.…”

“…A total of 57 articles were excluded during this second stage because they did not fulfill the inclusion criteria (A) (inter-reviewer agreement, kappa = 0.94) (18-21, 23, 24, 29-37, 39-72, 74-81). Three fulltext articles of the remaining 6 publications were excluded because they met 1 or more of the exclusion criteria (B) (inter-reviewer agreement, kappa = 1) (25,38,73). Finally, a total of 3 studies (24,82,83) fulfilled the required selection criteria of both phases and were included in the present review.…”

“…A complex interplay of physiologic and psychological interactions underlies the effectiveness of DH therapies (25). Both the patient and doctor must believe that a treatment is valuable and desirable for the method to be successful (2).…”
