"In vitro" evaluation of the apical sealing of root canals obturated with different techniques

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare the apical sealing of root canals obturated with different techniques. One hundred-six human mandibular incisors were submitted to instrumentation by means of the step-back technique. After instrumentation, one hundred teeth received an impermeable coating on the external surfaces of the crown and root (except for the area nearby the apical foramen). Afterwards, they were divided in five groups containing twenty elements each, according to the obturation technique emplo… Show more

“…21,22 About obturation techniques, groups of obtura II showed significantly less coronal leakage in comparison to groups of cold lateral compaction especially when AH26 used as a sealer. this result some what in agreement with some authors studies 23,24 as they showed that the cold lateral compaction show higher leakage than thermoplasticized technique. While this result disagreed with some studies, 25 it is concluded that the thermo plasticized technique present the higher level of infiltration than cold lateral compaction.…”

“…This is generally associated with higher material retention. 28 Nevertheless, the cold lateral-compaction technique does not allow complete filling of the root canal system irregularities, resulting in absence of sealer and/or gutta-percha in some canal areas and reduced filling bond strength, 10 as observed in the present study.…”

“…29 Overall, in the present study, better results were observed with thermoplastic filling techniques, but the lateral-compaction bond strength values obtained were in accordance with previous studies which confirmed their clinical acceptability. 5,10,30 Therefore, clinical implications of filling techniques and/or endodontic sealers should not be based on bond strength results alone; assessment of the sealing ability using different infiltration methods as well as 3-D micro-CT evaluations could provide different perspectives and demonstrate the actual effects of the materials/techniques used for endodontic treatment.…”
