Computerized room acoustics modeling has been practiced for almost 50 years up to date. These modeling techniques play an important role in room acoustic design nowadays, often including auralization, but can also help in the construction of virtual environments for such applications as computer games, cognitive research, and training. This overview describes the main principles, landmarks in the development, and state-of-the-art for techniques that are based on geometrical acoustics principles. A focus is given to their capabilities to model the different aspects of sound propagation: specular vs diffuse reflections, and diffraction.

Um dos objetivos do desenvolvimento e do aperfeiçoamento de técnicas numéricas em sistemas de geração de realidade virtual acústica e produção de aurilizações fidedignas, consiste na redução do custo computacional e, simultaneamente, garantir a qualidade sonora da simulação. Neste artigo, é apresentada uma nova técnica para modelar as funções de transferência associadas à cabeça humana, necessárias ao cômputo das respostas impulsivas biauriculares. São utilizadas redes neurais artificiais do tipo funções de base radial. Um conjunto dessas redes é treinado e testado de modo a cobrir todo o espaço auditivo no entorno da cabeça. Cada rede neural para uma dada direção tem como entrada o espectro da frente de onda sonora que atinge o receptor e, como saída, a resposta impulsiva associada à cabeça humana filtrada, para a direção correspondente. Desse modo, trabalha-se diretamente no domínio do tempo, contornando-se a necessidade de convoluções com uma redução do custo computacional em cerca de 90%. A técnica proposta é comparada com o método das convoluções, tanto no domínio do tempo como no domínio da frequência. Os resultados simulados demonstram a eficiência da técnica proposta, com valores de correlação bem próximos de um. Para validar o resultado, testes preliminares utilizando índices de articulação para comparar a percepção da fala em uma sala real e na mesma sala simulada computacionalmente utilizando a modelagem das respostas impulsivas filtradas aqui descrita foram conduzidos, com resultados plenamente satisfatórios.

This paper presents a ray tracing algorithm developed as a research and teaching tool. The motivations to pursue this task and some novel features of the algorithm are presented. Amongst them, it is possible to cite: (i) the receivers may grow in size, which saves some computational cost; (ii) sound intensity calculations are performed in a separate step than geometrical ray tracing; and (iii) those features allow Monte Carlo simulations for uncertainty prediction related to absorption data. The results obtained with the proposed algorithm are compared with the measured data (and other software packages) of Round Robins II (Elmia Hall) and III (PTB recording studio) and proved to be in good agreement with measured data. The ratio of the mean error by the JND of each parameter are compatible with the results presented by the other round robin participants. The product of this research is also scalable to an hybrid algorithm and alternatives to do so are provided through the discussion in the paper.
