Tape fixation: an important surgical step to improve success rate of anti-incontinence surgery

Abstract: Epub ahead of print]Purpose: Mid urethral slings are effective surgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence. However, 5% to 20% of patients still experience surgical failure with clinically significant recurrent or persistent stress urinary incontinence. Since a subset of these failures may be caused by improper tape position, we elucidated whether additional paraurethral fixation of a tape to prevent displacement during tensioning could improve the transobturator sling outcome. “…These exercises, also known as Kegel exercises, can take various forms and may involve exercises with additional equipment or without it, and can often be combined with a physical factor such as electrical current that strengthens the muscle contraction [34][35][36][37][38][39][40]. tapes -this answer is compatible with literature where tension free vaginal tapes (TVT) are a widely described and applied method of surgical treatment for this disorder [41,42].…”

“…al assessed discrepancies between sling location at placement and after a median of 1.6 years following transvaginal tape placement in 68 women and found evidence of slow sling migration, although in this study the slings migrated more distally . Sling fixation with periurethral sutures aimed at preventing sling migration has been shown to improve outcomes after transobturator MUS placement . Others have contended that sling fixation, and even ultimate midurethral location, is unnecessary for surgical success .…”
