comparison of CT urography and excretory urography in the detection and localization of urothelial carcinoma of the upper urinary tract

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of CT urography and excretory urography for the detection and localization of upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Of 128 patients at high risk for upper tract urothelial carcinoma who were examined with both CT urography and excretory urography between 2002 and 2007, 24 were undiagnosed and excluded. CT urography and excretory urography results of the remaining 104 patients and 552 urinary tract segments were compared… Show more

“…CT urography can combine the advantages of both CT scanning and IVU [22,23] . In a direct comparison of CT urography and excretory urography in a cohort of more than 100 patients, a significantly greater accuracy of CT urography was reported (sensitivity 93%, specificity 94%) [24] . Even if a CT is performed immediately after a conventional IVU with delayed excretion, a correct diagnosis has been reported in 97% of cases [25] .…”

“…However, CTU is an excellent technique for the evaluation of calculi and masses in the urinary system performed using the helical scan. [1][2][3] The contrast resolution of CTU is superior to that of conventional excretory urography and has become one of the robust imaging tools for the evaluation of the urinary system. 2 However, CTU results in higher radiation exposure than conventional excretory urography.…”
