Abstract: In our study, papillary RCC had a much higher occurrence among black patients compared to non-black patients. This is the first study to document such a great racial disparity among RCC subtypes.

“…We found that papillary RCC was nearly threefold more common in black patients compared to white patients in our cohort. This is consistent with prior single institutional and national registry cohorts that demonstrate a similar increased frequency of papillary histology in black patients [7,23]. Various factors could account for this finding.…”

“…Chromophobe RCC was also observed to be the most common RCC histologic subtype in two case series of young adults 27, 28. RCC subtypes have recently been reported to differ by race; RCC cases in black patients were nearly five times more likely to be of papillary histology than RCC from nonblack patients in a U.S. multicenter case series,15 and three times more likely in an analysis within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program 29. Our finding suggesting that black patients are also more likely than white patients to be diagnosed with RCC of other, rarer histologies warrants further investigation within the SEER Program.…”

“…As RCC histologic subtypes have been reported to differ in frequency by age, sex and race,11–15 it has been speculated that RCC subtypes may possess distinct etiologies 16. Of the few studies that have investigated this question, there is limited evidence suggesting that the association between obesity and RCC may be subtype‐specific.…”

“…Data also reflects that Asian Americans have the lowest incidence of renal tumors compared to African Americans and Caucasians (Siegal, 2012). A study in Brazil concluded that papillary RCC had much higher occurrence among black patients compared to non-blacks (Sankin et al, 2011).…”
