Bovine pericardium in penile prosthesis reimplantation

Abstract: We present a case of a patient who underwent a late penile prosthesis implant using bovine pericardium as a complement to the tunica albuginea involved in intense fibrosis that destroyed the corpus cavernosum after an infectious manifestation. The advantages of using bovine pericardium in the substitution of the tunica albuginea are discussed and its first use as a penile prosthesis lining is reported.

“…Seven patients required reduced diameter devices (AMS 700 CXM™), while two received standard sizes (AMS 700 CX™). Mean length of excised fibrotic corporal segments was 5.2 cm (range 4-7), and mean PP cylinder length was 13.8 cm (range [12][13][14][15][16]. No patient required grafting, and all patients reported limited thrusting with intercourse, presumably due to inadequate functional penile length.…”

“…Since the outcome of interest in this review was the result of pericardial grafts in reconstructive urologic surgeries, we also entered case reports in our review. Seven hundred fifteen patients underwent surgical reconstruction using pericardial grafts and had completed follow-up evaluations; 8 of these patients were published as case reports [8,10,11,31,37,40,47,48]. In addition, urologic reconstructive surgeries using pericardial grafts were performed on 139 animals comprising 45 rats [27,[54][55][56], 57 dogs [52,53,57,58], 31 rabbits [24,25,51], and 6 pigs [23].…”

“…Of those, there were 16 studies on patients with Peyronie's disease and/or penile straightening [9, 26, 30, 32-36, 39, 43-47, 49, 50], 3 reports on penile prosthesis complications [10,38,41], and 1 case of congenital chordee of the penis [40]. There were 2 reports of urethral reconstruction with successful outcomes and no complications [37,42].…”
