Ultrasound guided percutaneous nephrostomy for obstructive uropathy in benign and malignant diseases

Abstract: Objective: Analyze the success rate, complications and overall benefit of ultrasound guided percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) for the relief of obstructive uropathy in benign and malignant diseases. Materials and Methods: PCN was performed in 50 kidneys of 32 patients. It was performed in emergency rooms totally under ultrasound guidance by general surgeons. Seldinger technique was used in all cases. Changes in renal function after the procedure were analyzed using paired t-test. Results: The procedure was succes… Show more

“…However, peri-organ injury is higher (2.9% Vs. 1.5%) with fluoroscopy and as sonography allows real time imaging it is much safer. [8] Combined use of both the modalities is expected to achieve still better results in terms of success rate and decrease in the occurrence of major complications in PCN [9].…”

“…The classic method involves imaging guided puncture, guide wire insertion, serial dilatation and tube placement [17]. The success rate ranged from 84%~100% [5,18]. In the present study, we achieved a 100% success rate by using this approach.…”

“…Advanced malignant neoplasms have been the main indication for PCN, corresponding in different studies to 61, 19 52 20 and 58%. 21 Analysis of the medical history revealed that high blood pressure (HBP) was the most frequent associated disease in both groups (38% in SG and 21% in DG), differing from the findings of the Ministry of Health, which describes 14% HBP in the general population. 22 Perhaps the impairment of renal function that remained chronic in the groups can be related to an increase in the frequency of HBP.…”
