Preliminary experience with extraperitoneal endoscopic radical prostatectomy through duplication of the open technique

Abstract: Objective: To describe surgical and functional results with extraperitoneal laparoscopic radical prostatectomy with duplication of the open technique, from the experience obtained in the treatment of 28 initial cases.Materials and Methods: In a 36-month period, we prospectively analyzed 28 patients diagnosed with localized prostate cancer undergoing extraperitoneal laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Results: Mean surgical time was 280 min, with mean blood loss of 320 mL. As intraoperative complications, there … Show more

“…But the extraperitoneal technique potentially decreases the risk of intra-abdominal complications and better approximates open retropubic radical prostatectomy. In conclusion, this series confirms the reproducibility of the results of other centers [6,9] using EP-LRP for safety and efficacy. However, the number of patients in our cohort was not sufficient.…”

“…In RLRP, the limited dissection, the effect of pneumoperitoneum on micro vascularization (compression) and the shorter operating time resulted in a reduced blood loss and a lower rate of transfusions (11)(12)(13).…”

“…Other sets of studies on EERPE and its technique variations have also been published. Tobias-Machado et al 31 described the results of 28 cases who underwent a procedure virtually identical to the open technique. The mean surgical time for this cohort was 280 min, mean blood loss was 320 ml and median hospital stay was 3 days.…”
