Development and validation a task-specific checklist for a microsurgical varicocelectomy simulation model

Abstract: Purpose: To develop and validate a new test of specific technical skills required for microsurgical varicocelectomy. Materials and Methods: An electronic questionnaire was sent to 558 members of the Brazilian Society of Urology for the validation of the task-specific checklist (TSC) for assessment of microsurgical varicocelectomy. Participants who had experience in this procedure were selected as judges. For construct validation, 12 participants including attending urologists and urological residents in traini… Show more

“…All of these innovative grading tools are comprehensive and reliable for assessing the students' progress throughout a microsurgical course [30,31]. However, they focus solely on the technical aspects [32], such as manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, meticulous suture placement [33,34], speed, operative flow, motion 35, and patency of the anastomosis based on taskspecific checklists [36][37][38][39][40]. On the other hand, nontechnical skills (NTS) are equally important.…”

“…This disease is characterized by dilation and loss of functionality of the valve mechanism of the spermatic cord veins, causing blood reflux into the testicle. This greater venous return promotes a change in the temperature of the testicle, leading to an increase in the production of free radicals and consequent losses in the production and quality of spermatozoa 6 . Regarding vasectomy reversal, despite the scarcity of official epidemiological data, it is assumed that 6% of men undergoing this sterilizing surgery seek to regain their fertility at some point in their lives.…”

“…Therefore, in this pandemic scenario, together with the steep learning curve in the acquisition of operative skills in laparoscopy, training of residents outside the operating room was even more recommended 8 . Teaching through simulation models develops familiarity with the handling of laparoscopic instruments, as well as cognitive and technical competences in minimally invasive operations 9 .…”
