Effects of the transobturator tape procedure on overactive bladder symptoms and quality of life: a prospective study

Abstract: Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of transobturator tape (TOT) on overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms and quality of life. Materials and Methods: Patients with stress-predominant mixed urinary incontinence (MUI) who had undergone TOT procedures were considered candidates for this research. Preoperative assessment included anamnesis, pelvic examination, cough stress test (CST), and validated symptom severity and quality of life (QoL) questionnaires. The primary outcome, improvement and cure r… Show more

“…Patients were asked to fill the validated Turkish Urinary Distress Inventory short form (UDI-6) and Overactive Bladder Questionnaire (OAB-V8) since overactive bladder can frequently accompany SUI (15). Complicated SUI patients (16), pregnant women, puerperants, patients with overactive bladder (OAB-V8 score ≥8), pelvic organ prolapse exceeding the hymen, residual urine more than 150cc or having voiding difficulty questioned in a non-directing open manner (17), urinary tract infection, nocturia, postcoital incontinence, diabetes mellitus, and known neurological disease were excluded.…”

“…The OAB-V8 consists of 8 questions in which patients can be classified as symptom severity: none (0), very little (1), a little (2), quite a few (3), very (4), and too many (5). The total score ranges from 0-40 (19)(20)(21). The frequency of voiding, nocturia, and the number of pads used were collected from the 3-day bladder diary.…”

“…The frequency of voiding, nocturia, and the number of pads used were collected from the 3-day bladder diary. The Quality of Life-Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ7) was used to assess specific QoL related to incontinence (21,22). In addition, cure-improvement rates and treatment satisfaction were evaluated.…”

“…Among these treatments are physical therapy, pessaries, urethral bulking injections and, more often, surgery. Among the most widely used surgical techniques is the implantation of tapes below the mid-urethra, such as those placed by the transobturator route (TOT), attributed with a low incidence of complications, a short operative time, a fast learning curve and a success rate of over 80% [4]. Worldwide, suburethral sling implants are used for treating SUI in an estimated 9.45 cases in every 10,000 women [5].…”

“…Studies that assess functional recovery after implantation of a transobturator suburethral tape are limited [4,16]. Additionally, different questionnaires are often used, making it difficult to compare the results.…”
