Abstract: Introduction Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition, especially in middle aged women, requiring long term therapy with anticholinergics to maintain symptoms relief. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of tolterodine extended release (ER) used for OAB treatment on the sexual function of women.Materials and Methods Between August 2010 and August 2014, 220 women with confirmed OAB, attended Urogynecology Outpatient Clinic and were prospectively enrolled in this study. 158 women were evaluated… Show more

“…FSFI is one of the most frequently adopted questionnaires in assessing female sexual function and dysfunction, and it has been strongly recommended from the latest report of International Consultation on Sexual Medicine. [14, 15] FSFI allows to study and classify the following domains: (a) desire (b) arousal (c) lubrication (d) orgasm (e) satisfaction and (f) pain. A total FSFI score of 26.5 is the cut-off to discriminate women with and without sexual dysfunction [16].…”

“…Overall FSFI scores were higher in the group that received tolterodine. 21 An older study from 2008 illustrated similar findings with tolterodine. 16 Hajebrahimi et al 16 followed 30 sexually active women with OAB from ages 20e52 years by using the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) before treatment with tolterodine and at the end of each month of treatment until 3 months.…”

“…This review shed light on a handful of small trials, with inconsistent outcome measures, and concluded with no standard recommendation. 20 A study by Zachariou et al 21 demonstrated that PFMT improved sexual function in women with stress urinary incontinence by using FSFI scores before and after therapy. Although the study focused on patients with SUI and not OAB, it showed that improvement in urinary incontinence symptoms after PFMT can improve sexual function.…”

“…[12][13][14][15] There is a higher rate of sexual dysfunction in OAB with urinary incontinence (OAB-wet) than in OAB-dry, and sexual dysfunction improves with treatment for OAB. [16][17][18][19] Stress urinary incontinence is strongly involved in urinary incontinence during sexual intercourse, with reduced urethral resistance contributing the most. [20][21][22][23] In surgery for stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, it has been reported that, while it improves sexual function, there is apprehension that transvaginal mesh implantation can cause dyspareunia (coital pain) and chronic pain.…”
