In vitro studies reveal antiurolithic effect of Terminalia arjuna using quantitative morphological information from computerized microscopy

Abstract: Purpose:For most cases, urolithiasis is a condition where excessive oxalate is present in the urine. Many reports have documented free radical generation followed by hyperoxaluria as a consequence of which calcium oxalate (CaOx) deposition occurs in the kidney tissue. “…It is proven that the increased sizes of the crystals on the increased concentration of the urine as a result of supersaturation get a specific crystalline structure, which gets blunted on the treatment of plant extracts indicating blunted and spherical shapes of decreased crystals sizes [28]. Such crystals would be having less affinity for adhesion to epithelial surfaces and are excreted from the urinary tract reducing kidney stone generation and aggregation [29].
