Differential responses of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activities of two Vigna unguiculata cultivars to salt stress

Abstract: Vita 3 and Vita 5 are two Vigna unguiculata cultivars that differ in their capacities for survival in saline environments; Vita 3 is more tolerant and Vita 5 more sensitive. Both cultivars were submitted to salt stress with 0.1 M NaCl. After 8 days, root and shoot growth from both cultivars was reduced but reduction was more pronounced in Vita 5. Furthermore, leaf area was also reduced in this cultivar. Chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were not affected by salt stress, but the specif… Show more

“…Nevertheless, it is not clear if the photosynthetic response depends on stomatal or non-stomatal factors. Aragäo et al (2005) found that Vita3 had a lower RA than Vita5 under salt stress, while the former grew better than the latter.…”

“…Under high saline stress, the metabolic processes of photosynthesis are affected, and the thermostatic pressure is activated by a number of stroma enzymes that reduce CO 2 (Xue et al, 2008 ; Biswal et al, 2011 ). Additionally, the activity of Rubisco is inhibited both in vitro and in vivo under high salt stress (Aragao et al, 2005 ). In general, the enhanced activity of Rubisco provides stability to plants under stress conditions, and the leaf rubisco level shows a positive relationship with phosphorous (P) and N levels in most C 3 plants, except in glycophytic species; however, a contrasting relationship is detected under salt stress (Aragao et al, 2005 ; Taub, 2010 ; Makino, 2011 ).…”

This contrasting equation needs further investigation to clarify the relationship between these traits.…”

“…The PSII efficiency was expressed as the F v / F m ratio. The specific energy fluxes such as absorption (ABS), electron transport (ET) and dissipation (DI) per reaction center (RC) were also measured (Aragão et al, 2005).…”
