Identification of mycobacteria isolated at University Hospital of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: This study evaluated the prevalence of nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) in relation to the total number of cases of mycobacterial infections detected in patients admitted at the University Hospital of Santa Maria from 2008 to 2010. From the positive samples for the genus Mycobacterium, 67% belonged to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and 33% of them were classified as NTM. This investigation aims to contribute to the epidemiology of mycobacterioses, inasmuch as patients infected by NTM require d… Show more

“…The identification of M. tuberculosis infections in 63.6% (35/55) of samples is consistent with other studies that found a higher prevalence of MTB; 67% [26], 57.5% [27], 78.6% [28] and 77% [29]. Despite the higher occurrence of MTB, it has been shown elsewhere that the MTB frequency is declining over the years, while the NTM frequency is significantly increased, with prevalence ranging from 9.1% in 2003 to 31.9% in 2009 [28].…”

“…In the state of São Paulo, where most Brazilian studies have been conducted, the percentage of NTM infection among patients suspected of mycobacteriosis has been reported to be around 20% [32,33,37,34] and in the state of Rondônia one study also found a similar result [41]. Agertt and coworkers reported 33% of NTM in Rio Grande do Sul but the inclusion of non-clinically relevant samples of both pulmonary and extrapulmonary origin probably led to an overestimation and does not reflect the true incidence of PNTM disease [42].…”
