Proteins with osteoinductive potential, especially recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP)‐2, have large effects on cell growth and their differentiation. The aim of this study was to assess repair of bone defects in rat calvaria with different types of grafts associated with rhBMP‐2, through immunohistochemistry and micro computed tomography (CT) analyses. A total of 35 male Wistar rats were selected, each weighing ~250 g, with a waiting period of 6 weeks from the creation of the defect to the sacrifice, and divided into five groups (n = 7): autograft plus 5 μg rhBMP‐2 (AuG/BMP‐2); allograft plus 5 μg rhBMP‐2 (AlG/BMP‐2); xenograft (heterologous) plus 5 μg rhBMP‐2 (XeG/BMP‐2); 5 μg rhBMP‐2 (BMP‐2) and the control group (n = 7). The micro CT reveal that all groups associating different bone grafts with BMP‐2 showed increased bone formation compared to the control. The immunostaining show that osteocalcin and bone sialoprotein were higher in groups with BMP‐2 than control group; BMP was high expressed in AuG/BMP‐2, AlG/BMP‐2, and BMP‐2; vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was more expressed in groups with BMP‐2; VEGF‐R2 was low to moderate in AuG/BMP‐2, XeG/BMP‐2, and BMP‐2, predominantly moderate in AlG/BMP‐2 and low in the control; CD‐31 was predominantly moderate in AuG/BMP‐2, AlG/BMP‐2, and XeG/BMP‐2, low to moderate in BMP‐2 and low in the control. The results revealed that rhBMP‐2 improved bone repair when administered alone, or when associated with different bone grafts.

Morus nigra L., popularly known as blackberry, mulberry or blackberry bush, is a plant species widely used by folk medicine. Although there are few scientific studies that denote its therapeutic features, an important highlight of black mulberry is the recurrent use of tea leaves in popular environment for treatment of climacteric because it is considered a source of substances with estrogenic activity, which, if deficient, decreases osteoblastic action. Thus, the objective of the present study was to analyze the effect of the infusion of the leaves of M. nigra L. on bone repair experimental models. Twenty female Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus), ∼ 100 days old, were submitted to fracture with bone loss in the left fibula. After that, they ingested tea leaves of M. nigra L. for 30 days without interruption. The animals suffered euthanasia after the treatment period. The results showed a significant healing of fractures in all animals that ingested the tea, when compared with other groups. In this way, it is possible to suggest that M. nigra L. tea is able to trigger a positive response in bone repair mechanism; however, it is not possible to state at what level this positive interference occurs, since mechanisms of its action have not yet been elucidated, thus requiring more specific studies on the phytotherapeutic effects of this plant.

Caracterização das plantas medicinais e medicamentos fitoterápicos para tratamento da osteoporose utilizados no Brasil. Arq. Cienc. Saúde UNIPAR, Umuarama, v. 20, n. 3, p, 183-188, set./dez. 2016. RESUMO:A osteoporose é caracterizada por desordem do sistema esquelético caracterizada por baixa massa óssea e deteriorização da microarquitetura do tecido ósseo levando a fragilidade óssea com aumento da suscetibilidade a fraturas. Considerada a doença osteometabólica mais comum, de distribuição global, pode comprometer ambos os sexos, diferentes idades ou raças. As consequências relacionadas a essas doenças são as fraturas vertebrais verificadas em aproximadamente 20% das mulheres acima de 65 anos em pós-menopausa. Além disso, a consequência dessa fragilidade óssea pode levar a consequências graves como dor, deformidades, sequelas, restrições motoras e morte precoce, portanto, associada com alta morbi/mortalidade. Desta forma, sabendo que as medicações utilizadas para o tratamento da osteoporose não são isentas de risco (por exemplo, aumento do risco de tromboses, câncer de mama/ ovário/ endométrio, lesões musculares, entre outras), foi realizado uma revisão bibliográfica com o intuito de avaliar se existem plantas medicinais que possam ter efeitos ósseo protetores com menor número de efeitos adversos em relação aos fármacos sintéticos. Em síntese, verificou-se que os fármacos sintéticos podem acarretar prejuízos à saúde do paciente a longo prazo e que as plantas medicinais ou fitoterápicos utilizadas no Brasil apresentam estudos científicos com menores efeitos colaterais e, portanto, são uma alternativa viável para o tratamento e prevenção da osteoporose, visto que a Politica Nacional de Práticas Integrativas e Complementares na Atenção Básica sustenta esta tendência mediante subsídios como a Farmacopeia Brasileira e o Memento Fitoterápico. The consequences of these diseases are vertebral fractures in approximately 20% of postmenopausal women over 65 years of age.
