Hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) collected on the inner continental shelf of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Oceanographic Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I and II

Abstract: ) collected on the inner continental shelf of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Oceanographic Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I and II. Biota Neotrop. 11(2): http://www.biotaneotropica.org.br/v11n2/en/ abstract?article+bn03711022011Abstract: The Brazilian Navy (DHN/MB) commissioned a series of Oceanographic Operations covering almost the entire inner continental shelf of the country from the 1960s through the 1980s. Surveys provided geological data on the sea bottom and marine biota along the entire Braz… Show more

“…In Brazil, O. sargassicola was recorded off the coast of Espírito Santo [ 10 , 48 ] and São Paulo states [ 1 , 49 , 50 , 51 ], and together with O. integra , it has been recorded along the coast of Rio de Janeiro [ 10 , 52 , 53 ], Paraná [ 54 ] and Santa Catarina states [ 13 ]. They are usually found in shallow waters, though have also been recorded in deeper areas of 35 and 70 meters [ 10 , 53 ], and frequently occur in epiphytic associations, often on macroalgae of the genus Sargassum C.Agardh, 1820 [ 1 , 13 , 50 , 51 , 54 , 55 ]. The species O. sargassicola , for instance, is among the most common and abundant species of hydroids in ephypytic environments in São Paulo and Paraná states [ 51 , 54 ].…”

“…As discussed in greater detail elsewhere , that name was rejected prior to 1961 as a junior secondary homonym and it has now been replaced by the binomen Dynamena dalmasi (Versluys, 1899). Typically found on coastal reefs and banks (e.g., Cain 1972, as Sertularia dalmasi;Defenbaugh 1974, as S. dalmasi;Wenner et al 1984;Rezak et al 1985;Grohmann et al 2003Grohmann et al , 2011Hajdu & Teixeira 2011), the reported depth range of D. dalmasi is from 8-366 m (Calder & Cairns 2009).…”

“…Their coastal distribution coincides with distributions of benthic colonies of Clytia spp. on the coast of Brazil, most of them found in intertidal and shallow areas to 70 m (Grohmann et al , 2003, 2011; Miranda et al , 2011), and rarely to 200 m depths (Migotto et al , 2004). In shallow areas, benthic species probably are impacted more by tidal currents and turbulence generated by winds and storms than ones in deeper regions.…”
