Distribuição e conservação das aves na região do Cantão, Tocantins: ecótono Amazônia/Cerrado

Abstract: Abstract:The Cantão region is a complex transition between Amazonia and Cerrado. Human interference is widespread even though the region is covered by two protected areas: the Cantão State Park and the Bananal Island/Cantão Environmental Protection Area. Bird inventories identified 418 species in the region, 382 on the present study. Of those, 27 are Amazonian and 9 Cerrado endemics. Four bird species are listed in the IUCN's red list as vulnerable: Penelope ochrogaster, Harpyhaliaetus coronatus, Cercomacra fe… Show more

“…In evaluating the richness of birds reported to EESA, it is observed a higher number of species recorded in relation to several areas of the Cerrado (see Valadão 2012), as well as several other protected areas in Brazil (Motta-Junior et al 2008, Cavarzere et al 2009, Aleixo and Guilherme 2010, with methodological reservations. Its expressive number of species places EESA among the richest protected areas in terms of bird species in Brazil (Pacheco et al 2007, Pinheiro and Dornas 2009, Somenzari et al 2011, especially in terms of areas not primarily covered by forest. This richness becomes even more significant when we consider the reduced size of the EESA, less than 30,000 ha.…”

“…Sua raridade na EESGT pode ser devido às queimadas que aconteceram nos últimos anos. Fora da EESGT esta espécie foi encontrada sempre próxima a plantações, como observado também por Pinheiro & Dornas (2009) na Área de Proteção Ambiental da Ilha do Bananal e no Parque Estadual do Cantão.…”

“…The water temperature varies between 29° and 33°C throughout the year, and the annual mean temperature is 28°C (Pinheiro and Dornas ). The high fish diversity (298 species) and the diverse habitat in PEC attract many piscivorous predators, including several bird species, caimans ( Caiman crocodilus and Melanosuchus niger ), the giant otter ( Pteronura brasiliensis ), the pirarucu ( Arapaima gigas , one of the world's largest freshwater fish), and the Araguaian river dolphin ( Inia araguaiaensis ), among others.…”
