An alternative species taxonomy of the birds of Mexico

Abstract: Extensive debate has surrounded the application of alternative species concepts in Ornithology. The biological species concept (BSC) and phylogenetic species concept (PSC) have typically been set in opposition, with extensive debate on the relative merits of each. An alternative is the evolutionary species concept (ESC), which offers a perspective similar to that of the PSC, yet with several significant differences. To date, no major avifauna has been examined and compared among taxonomic viewpoints. Herein, w… Show more

“…Several authors have proposed reclassification of the California and Holarctic clades as distinct species (Navarro‐Sigüenza & Peterson 2004; McKay & Zink 2010). Our results show that mtDNA clades within the same population are indistinguishable using morphological parameters such as those used in traditional taxonomy.…”

“…Individual summaries of distributions of species were summed to produce richness maps for resident species, summer resident species, and winter resident species, as well as of endemic species only (SEMARNAT 2002;Navarro-Sigüenza and Peterson 2004). Maps from Ridgely et al (2003) (Carrera and de la Fuente 2003) to assess whether areas recognized as priority under diverse criteria coincide with areas of greatest species richness of aquatic birds.…”

“…In addition, two papers (Navarro-Sigüenza & Peterson [12] and Rojas-Salto et al [13]) have made their preference explicit for the PSC over on the mBSC solely the basis that this will allow more taxa to be count as endangered to some degree and thus qualify for government protective action. Yet Garnett & Christidis [14] have suggested that most laws and international conventions avoid arguments over species' definitions altogether, thus negating arguments that such definitions should be changed to further species' conservation.…”
