The activity patterns and microhabitat use of Pseudis minuta Günther, 1858 (Anura, Hylidae) in the Lagoa do Peixe National Park, a biosphere reserve of the brazilian subtropics

Abstract: Pseudis minuta is abundant in a variety of aquatic environments of the Pampa domain. Therefore, it can be considered a good model for testing hypotheses on environmental heterogeneity and the influence of climate on the activity of anurans. In this study, we examined the spatial distribution pattern of P. minuta in terms of microhabitats and the influence of abiotic factors on seasonal fluctuations in the abundance of this species. Samples were collected monthly from April 2008 to May 2009 in wetlands and coas… Show more

“…Less attention has been dedicated to subtemperate open habitats, such as wetlands. Southern Brazilian wetlands possess unique climatic characteristics, such as colder winters, in comparison with other Brazilian regions (Huckembeck et al 2012;Oliveira et al 2013). Given the divergent opinions regarding the effects of climatic factors on the activity patterns of anurans (Oseen and Wassersug 2002;Saenz et al 2006), transitional climatic regions represent an important natural laboratory for testing ecological hypotheses concerning the evolutionary process in ectotherms.…”

“…Periphyton from the Mangueira Lagoon and POM from the Patos Lagoon are important carbon sources that sustain the trophic webs in the region (Rodrigues et al, 2014) and are potentially ingested by spoonbills due to their tactile foraging technique. Similarly, the amphibian Pseudis minuta Günther, 1858 was included because it is an abundant aquatic frog (Huckembeck et al, 2012) and, therefore, serves as potential prey for egrets, given their foraging tactics.…”
