Impact of maintenance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii De Man, 1879 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Palaemonidae) broodstock on the water used in culture ponds

Abstract: Aquaculture production generates social and economic benefits, but can also cause environmental impacts. The objectives of this study were: a) to characterise the impacts caused by the maintenance of broodstock of the giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) on the physical and chemical characteristics of the water used in culture ponds, and b) to evaluate the relationship between the biomass of the prawns and the impact of culture on the water used in the ponds. Between January and December 2004, we dete… Show more

“…The high values of limnological variables (except N‐nitrate) at the end of farming indicate that the increase in detritus and nutrients have a positive relationship with the increasing biomass of M. amazonicum . Positive linear relationships among the increases in the prawn biomass as well as the inorganic nitrogen, TKN and TP concentrations were reported by Biudes, Camargo and Henares () in a broodstock pond of M. rosenbergii . In the marine shrimp Penaeus latisulcatus culture, the increasing P‐orthophosphate and TP concentrations were positively correlated with the increase in supplied food from 3 to 7.5% of biomass (Le, Fotedar & Kumar ).…”

“…The increase in total‐P and total‐N due in Nile tilapia ( O. niloticus ) water‐renewal aquaculture facilities was 3.4 and 1.7 times higher respectively (Henry‐Silva & Camargo ). The maintenance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii broodstock resulted in 2.4‐ and 1.69‐fold increases in total‐P and in total‐N, respectively, in the effluent concentrations of the pond, compared with that of the supply water (Biudes, Camargo & Henares ). Such increases were lower than those observed in the present study, in which the increases (average of all three treatments) for total‐P and total‐N were 4.24, and 5.95, times higher respectively.…”
