An identification guide is presented for species of calanoid copepod family Diaptomidae from “de la Plata” River Basin (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay). It was based on material collected during the summer and winter of 2010 from 43 sites across the eastern part and the lower stretches of this basin, the second largest in South America and the fourth in the world. The guide contains identification keys and species diagnoses for males and females, richly supported by scanning electronic micrographs and/or line drawings of 19 species. It also includes some general remarks on the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of these species. The key was adjusted to be useful for these species only, with separate keys for each sex, and is the first for females of South America. One species classified herein as incertae sedis was not included in the analysis. At least ten other species have previously been recorded in the basin but were not present in our samples. This is the first attempt to compile comprehensive taxonomic information on this group of copepods in this region, and it is expected to become a useful tool for biologists and young taxonomists interested in the crustacean biota of the Neotropical region.

The present effort is a systematic review of the most diverse diaptomid copepods from the South America, the Notodiaptomus Kiefer 1936. We proposed to review and identify new morphological characteristics for 37 currently accepted species, assess nomenclatural status, and to examine their relatedness relations. The identification of 2700 morphological hypotheses for males and females are encoded in DEscription Language for TAxonomy (DELTA), used for a historical evaluation of the genus, and arrive at the first parsimony-based phylogeny for Notodiaptomus. We present synonymy of all species, status of type material, updated record of occurrences, taxonomic remarks, and dichotomous and interactive key for males and females. The rescue of the common and exclusive ancestor based on 80 synapomorphic characters recovers the monophyly of the organisms of the considered species, supports the discussion of the exclusive conditions and the historically indicated taxonomic relationships. Through this we wish to help establish an additional step on the consistency of the taxonomy of these species, contributing to answer important questions about the origin of some of the characteristics presented.

Copepoda Calanoida do Estado de São Paulo foi intensivamente estudado através da análise de 389 amostras obtidas dos corpos hidricos de 22 Unidades de Gerenciamento de Recursos Hidricos (UGRHI) do Estado de São Paulo durante o Programa BIOTA/FAPESP realizado entre 1999-2003. Foram identificadas 12 espécies sendo uma delas especie nova Notodiaptomus oliveirai foi encontrada em quase todas as bacias hidrográficas, exceto na UGRHI Alto Tietê. Uma outra espécie, provavelmente nova, necessita de um melhor estudo para a sua identificação. Algumas espécies de rara ocorrência já registradas no Estado de São Paulo tais como Idiodiaptomus gracilipes, Trichodiaptomus coronatus, Notodiaptomus conifer, N. spinuliferus, N. transitans, N. isabelae, N. jatobensis e Pseudodiaptomus acutus não foram encontradas nas amostragens do BIOTA/FAPESP.
