Benthic Bacillariophyta of the Paripe River estuary in Pernambuco state, Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the benthic diatom composition from the estuary sediment in the Pernambuco State, based on 32 samples. Samples were collected monthly from September through December 1999 (dry period) and from April through July 2000 (rainy period) during four pre-established sampling stations. Results indicated 19 families and 31 specific and infraspecific taxa. Eight new records were founded for Pernambuco State: Auliscus coelatus, Fallacia nummularia, Navicula algida, Plagiograma pulche… Show more

“…Phytoplankton is considered as a suitable bioindicator, they have a worldwide distribution, high reproduction rate and each species has high sensitivity towards different levels of organically polluted waters (Moura et al, 2007). Also, they are used as indicators for saprobic conditions such as salinity, acidification and eutrophication in lakes and rivers (Smith et al, 2014).…”

“…Temperature showed diurnal and seasonal variations [11]. In the study on the benthic Bacillariophyta of the Paripe river estuary in Brazil the temperature was found to be constant throughout the year and the pH was always alkaline [12]. In the present study the pH value ranged from 6.4 (lowest) to 7.9 (highest) .The lowest pH of 6.4 was recorded from station III during monsoon period.…”

“…A total of 500 -600 frustules per sample (depending on the abundance of diatoms) were identified and counted using the phase contrast light microscope (1000 X). The diatoms were identified to species level based on studies by Mizuno 1964;Patrick & Reimer 1966a, b;Bourrelly 1981;Lobo et al, 1996;John, 2000;Biggs & Kilroy 2000;Oliveira et al, 2001;Lobo et al, 2002;Lobo et al, 2004;Bicudo & Menezes 2006;Salomoni et al, 2006;Delgado et al, 2007;Moura et al, 2007;Soares et al, 2007;Zalocar de Damitrovic et al, 2007 and the website of the Phycology Section of The Academy of Natural Sciences of the USA (http://diatom.acnatsci.org).…”

“…Multiple factors prevailing at different temporal and spatial scales play an important role in structuring benthic diatom communities in lotic systems (Potapova & Charles 2002;Moura et al, 2007), with local environmental conditions playing a more important role compared to broad-scale climatic, vegetational and geographical factors (Pan et al, 1996). Each particular species requires different structural, physical and chemical characteristics intrinsic to its habitat.…”
