-We explored the relationships between diet and morphology in 30 fish species from forested tropical streams of the Bolivian Amazon. These species were first assigned to eight broad trophic guilds based on stomach contents analysis. The relationships between diet and morphology were then examined using Redundancy Analysis, after having checked for potential phylogenetical effects. Results show that, independently of any phylogenetic constraints, some of the trophic guilds could be grossly predicted from few relevant morphological attributes (i.e. relative intestinal length, standard length and mouth orientation) and thus suggest a significant link between diet and morphology. In other words, species having similar diet tend to converge to some extent on some morphological attributes. This link was nevertheless rather weak, suggesting that even if morphology may set limits to patterns of resource use, these limits are broad enough to allow fishes changing their choice of prey resources to respond to local biotic and/or abiotic conditions. Key words: Diet / Morphology / Phylogeny / Convergence / Tropical streams / Fishes / Bolivia Résumé -Relations entre le régime alimentaire et les caractéristiques morphologiques des peuplements de poissons de petits cours d'eau forestiers de l'Amazonie bolivienne. Nous avons analysé les relations entre le régime alimentaire et la morphologie de 30 espèces de poissons présentes dans de petits cours d'eau forestiers de l'Amazonie bolivienne. Après une analyse de leurs contenus stomacaux, les 30 espèces ont été réparties, dans un premier temps, dans huit grandes guildes trophiques. Dans un deuxième temps, après avoir analysé les éventuelles contraintes phylogénétiques, nous avons examiné, par analyse multivariée, les relations entre le régime alimentaire et la morphologie des espèces. Les résultats montrent que, indépendamment de la phylogénie, certaines des guildes trophiques peuvent être prédites d'après quelques attributs morphologiques (i.e. longueur relative de l'intestin, longueur standard et orientation de la bouche). Cela étant, ce lien entre régime alimentaire et caractéristiques morphologiques reste relativement faible, ce qui suggère que même si la morphologie limite les possibilités d'utilisation des ressources, cette limite est assez large pour permettre aux espèces de s'adapter à différentes conditions biotiques ou abiotiques locales.

Feeding habits of Bryconamericus stramineus were described in different streams of Guiraí River Sub-basin in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Mid-West of Brazil. Fishes were sampled bi-monthly between October/06 and August/07 in seven streams and the samples were separated in two seasons: dry and wet. A total of 960 individuals were captured. B. stramineus showed an insectivore feeding habit, consuming seventeen food items. The feeding tactic of preys capture varied between the seasons and the locations. During the wet season the most important items were Hymenoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera, while Megaloptera and Diptera were the most important during dry season. In all analyzed streams, B. stramineus showed a diet basically composed by insects; the other items spent sometimes, corroborating the literature. Resumo: Os hábitos alimentares de Bryconamericus stramineus foram estudados em riachos da sub-bacia do rio Guiraí, no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, centro-oeste do Brasil. As amostragens foram realizadas bimestralmente em sete riachos na bacia do rio Guiraí, Alto Rio Paraná, de outubro/2006 a agosto/2007. Foram capturados 960 exemplares. As amostragens foram divididas em estação chuvosa e estação seca. B. stramineus apresentou hábito alimentar insetívoro; a espécie utilizou 17 itens alimentares, sendo que a tática de consumo das presas variou entre as estações a as localidades. Durante a estação chuvosa nos estômagos prevaleceram as Ordens Hymenoptera, Diptera e Coleoptera, durante a seca predominaram as Ordens Megaloptera e Diptera. Em todos os riachos analisados, B. stramineus apresentou dieta basicamente composta por insetos, sendo os demais itens consumidos ocasionalmente, confirmando a literatura. Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages structure in two headwater streams, south-eastern Brazil

From December 2003 to September 2004, benthic macroinvertebrates (BM), fishes, water and sediment were collected quarterly at six stations in two streams of the upper São Francisco River basin, south-eastern Brazil. We evaluated the ecological conditions, habitat diversity, water quality, composition and structure of BM communities, as well as the food habits of the local fish fauna. By applying a protocol for rapid characterization of ecological conditions and habitat diversity, three of the sampled localities were classified as "pristine" while the others stations were considered "altered". A well oxygenated water with near neutral pH and low electric conductivity (< 0.01 mS/cm) and nutrient concentrations (< 0.08 mg/l total P and < 0.90 mg/l total N) was found for both streams. Sediment analysis revealed the dominance of medium, fine and very fine sand fractions in all sampled areas. The organic matter content in the sediment was higher in the lotic and well preserved area. We found 45 BM taxa, and Chironomidae (68%), Oligochaeta (10%) and Elmidae (8.5%) showed the highest abundances. From the stomach contents analysis of 13 fish species, 26 BM taxa were found, including four that were not collected in the sediment samples, being Chironomidae the dominant group (> 60%). Our results show that human activities such as forest clearing, agriculture and cattle rising have altered the habitat diversity in freshwater ecosystems in a process that affects the aquatic biota and thus the food availability to the fish fauna. The results also highlight the importance of the fish stomach contents analysis as a complementary tool in BM inventories.
