Composition and abundance of zooplankton in the limnetic zone of seven reservoirs of the Paranapanema River, Brazil

Abstract: The species composition and abundance of the zooplankton community of seven reservoirs of the Paranapanema River, located between 22 degrees 37'-23 degrees 11'S and 48 degrees 55'-50 degrees 32'W, were analysed over four periods, in the year of 1979. The zooplankton community was composed of 76 species of Rotifera, 26 species of Cladocera and 7 species of Copepoda. For a large part of the period under study the Rotifera were dominant, followed by Copepoda. The Piraju and Salto Grande reservoirs, which occupy i… Show more

“…Approximately four hundred individuals of the most abundant species were registered, with an approximate 10% precision, and a 95% confidence interval (Bicudo and Bicudo, 2004). Frequency of occurrence was estimated for total phytoplankton and zooplankton organisms were divided into three categories: constant (50% or above); common (between 10% and 50%) and rare (between 1 and 10%) (Sampaio et al, 2002).…”

“…These characteristics are typical of pioneer community, which usually colonize unstable environment (Allan, 1976;Matsumura-Tundisi et al, 1990;Sampaio et al, 2002;Illyova´and Pastuchova´, 2012;Vad et al, 2012). Pandey and Verma (2004) and Sahib (2004) observed that the zooplankton community is directly correlated with abiotic factors.…”

“…Em função da eutrofização muitos reservatórios e lagos no mundo já perderam a capacidade de abastecimento humano, de manutenção da vida aquática e de recreação. Um número crescente de trabalhos vem sendo desenvolvido demonstrando a gravidade do problema (Sampaio et al, 2002;Bennion et al, 2005;Pinto-Coelho et al, 2005).…”
