Therefore, a clear understanding of the relationship on niche overlap, similarity and competition among species is necessary to answer questions on community structure (Lawlor, 1980). This may result in considerable overlap of prey consumption, especially if they are closely related AbstractWe studied the feeding ecology of two Hylinae anurans (Hypsiboas raniceps and Scinax acuminatus), living sympatrically and syntopically in the Pantanal of Miranda, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The two hylid species had similar relative mouth width but differed in body size. The diet of the two frog species were composed of arthropodan prey. Both species consumed 11 different prey types, of which seven were common among them. Hypsiboas raniceps had a larger niche breadth (B A = 0.64) than S. acuminatus (B A = 0.48). Trophic niche overlap among frog species was 60.7 %. Our data are suggestive that although for many anurans the diet simply tend to reflect prey availability in the microhabitat, these two frog species, despite sharing similar microhabitat and period of activity (thus potentially exposed to a similar array of preys), tends to differ somewhat in diet (about 40%) which may result from some intrinsic ecological aspects to each of them (e.g. ecophysiology) and/or differences in body size.

ResumoSão apresentadas informações sobre a distribuição espacial e sazonal das espécies de anuros na Serra do Ouro Branco, sul da Cadeia do Espinhaço, Brasil, a partir do monitoramento de três ambientes aquáticos: uma lagoa, um riacho permanente e um riacho temporário, realizado entre julho de 2006 e junho 2007. Foram encontradas 28 espécies pertencentes às famílias Brachycephalidae (2) Bufonidae (2), Centrolenidae (1), Cycloramphidae (2), Hylidae (16), Leiuperidae (2), Leptodactylidae (2) e Microhylidae (1). A lagoa apresentou maior riqueza (20). Foram definidos cinco diferentes padrões reprodutivos: (1) espécies que vocalizam o ano todo, ou quase todo, com agregações maiores nos meses chuvosos; (2) espécies oportunistas com atividade de vocalização associada aos meses chuvosos; (3) espécies que vocalizam predominantemente no inverno; (4) espécies com padrão reprodutivo explosivo, com picos de vocalização durante as chuvas intensas e (5) espécies que não apresentaram um padrão definido de vocalização. A atividade de vocalização da maioria das espécies associase aos meses com maior volume de chuva, mas não mostrou relacionar-se à temperatura. Houve sobreposição na distribuição sazonal de algumas espécies. A distribuição espacial e sazonal das espécies de anuros varia de acordo com o ambiente que ocupam, adequando-se aos fatores bióticos e abióticos dos mesmos. We found 28 species belonging to the families Brachycephalidae (2), Bufonidae (2), Centrolenidae (1), Cycloramphidae (2), Hylidae (16), Leiuperidae (2), Leptodactylidae (2) and Microhylidae (1). The pond showed the greatest richness (20). Contribution of environmental variables to anuran community structure in the Caatinga Domain of Brazil. To ascertain the influence of environmental variables on the structure of anuran communities, we conducted tests to determine which variables best explain the spatial distribution patterns of different communities of anurans in a rocky, montane environment characterized mainly by open habitats and gallery forests. The study area is the Sete Passagens State Park in the State of Bahia, Brazil, an area included in the Chapada Diamantina Region and in the Caatinga Morphoclimatic Domain. We sampled 20 plots (60 × 25 m) during two rainy seasons, and measured 13 environmental variables. The environmental matrix was reduced to four synthetic axes through the principal component analysi, and the anuran community matrix was reduced to a synthetic axis through the nonmetric multidimensional scaling method. We tested the association between environmental axes (independent variables) and community composition (dependent variable) using a multiple regression analysis. The single axis significantly associated with the species of anurans found in any given plot is Principal Component 1, in which the major contributors to variation are factors involving vegetation structure, listed in descending order, as follow: percentage of leaf litter, density of trees, canopy height, soil moisture, and percentage of understory, shrub, and herb layers. The ordination of the anuran community showed an environmental gradient from the Campo Rupestre to Semideciduous Forest patches, characterized mainly by the gradual increase of layering in the vegetation.
