A new species of terrestrial planarian (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida: Terricola) from South Brazil

Abstract: Geoplana josefi sp. nov. of South Brazil is described herein. The species shows etary polymorphism. Neither youngs nor adults show the characteristic colour pattern of the mature worms. The species has a multilayered lining in the female atrium. The allopatric G. trigueira, which does not have such a lining, is similar externally and internally with adults of G. josefi, its seminal vesicle, however, being unpaired.

“…In this alignment we included individuals belonging to the new species described here ( Obama nungara sp. nov.), individuals of O. marmorata and other known species [ O. anthropophila Amaral, Leal‐Zanchet & Carbayo, 2015 (Álvarez‐Presas et al ., ), O. burmeisteri (Schultze & Müller, ) , O. carinata (Riester, ), O. decidualis Amaral & Leal‐Zanchet (Álvarez‐Presas et al ., ), O. josefi (Carbayo & Leal‐Zanchet, ), O. ladislavii (Graff, )]. The alignment of the Cox1 dataset for the GMYC analysis has a length of 822 bp and includes 59 Obama sequences, all shown for Cox1 in Table except Lago‐Barcia et al .…”

“…The systematics of the family Geoplanidae (Stimpson) is still poorly resolved and there are relatively few neotropical species described in the literature. This is illustrated by the fact, that from the type locality of the species herein described, 40 species have been registered but only seven have been described in the literature Carbayo 2000, 2001;Carbayo and Leal-Zanchet 2001).…”
