First record of Hesperolabops nigriceps Reuter (Hemiptera: Miridae) on Opuntia ficus-indica in Milpa Alta, Mexico City

Abstract: -In recent years a species of Hesperolabops has become a problem as a pest of nopalitos, Opuntia ficus-indica, in Milpa Alta, in the south of Mexico City, which is the most important production region of this vegetable in the country. A survey of Hesperolabops in Milpa Alta has resulted in the first report of Hesperolabops nigriceps Reuter. This occurrence should be monitored and considered in future studies in order to avoid misidentification of Hesperolabops spp. Kirkaldy native populations there, and to avo… Show more

“…(Hemiptera: Coreidae), y Hesperolabops nigriceps Reuter (Hemiptera: Miridae) (Mena-Covarrubias 2018). Su mayor daño es en los cladodios, estructuras florales y frutos en desarrollo, ocasionando deformaciones o caída prematuras (Palomares-Pérez et al 2010, Mena-Covarrubias 2011, Palomares-Pérez et al 2012). Pocas especies de hemípteros depredadores se reportan en México, situación que subestima su potencial como agentes de control biológico natural en agroecosistemas.…”

“…This plant is grown in more than 13 000 ha, but the village of Milpa Alta, south of Mexico City produces more than 40% of nopal (SIAP, 2013). It is known in this area the existence of pests and diseases that reduce the production of this crop, mainly affecting the vigour of the plant, causing weakness, chlorosis and severe infestations that can cause death (Palomares-Pérez et al, 2010;CESAVEDF, 2011;Palomares-Pérez et al, 2012). However, in Mexico there are no formal studies to identify the organisms associated 2010; CESAVEDF, 2011;Palomares-Pérez et al, 2012).…”
