Camponotus consobrinus, the banded sugar ant is so called because of its liking for sweet food. This study was carried out to determine the association between Camponotus consobrinus and potential bacterial pathogens in human dwellings and their public health importance. The ants were purposively collected from four locations; kitchens, bed rooms of various homes, shops and bakeries. Out of the 250 Camponotus consobrinus caught for the study, 90(36.0%) were caught in the kitchen, 75(30.0%) in the bed rooms 40(16.0%) in the bakery while 45(18.0%) were caught in the shops. A prevalence of 82.0% microbial isolates was recorded in the study. The kitchen had the highest number of isolates 75(36.6%) followed by the bed room 55(26.8%) while the bakery recorded the lowest number of isolates 35(17.1%). Escherichia coli was the most common isolate 73(30.0%), followed by Morganella morganii 45(18.0%) while Serratia marcescens and Citrobacter freundii were the lowest common isolates 10(4.0%) each. Most of the Compnotous consobrinus examined in the four locations harboured potential pathogens. The presence of ants in homes and shops may lead to the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, the control of ants in human dwellings must be taken seriously.

Ants are a very rich and cosmopolitan group of insects. e ants' colonies are composed by di erent castes, in which each individual has its function in the colony (i.e. workers, soldiers, and the queen). is amazing organization in castes is the main responsible for their evolutionary success and their adaptation in distinct types of habitats. Two thousand species of ants in Brazil have already been described, and almost 50 of them adapted to live in urban habitats. Ants are considered urban pests, mainly because they physically carry disease organisms and because they damage household appliances. We sampled urban ants in the city of Jataí -GO, located in a region of Brazilian Cerrado, in the Southwest of the State of Goiás. To better demonstrate the ant fauna of this region, we sampled the ants inside houses and in the backyards. We tested if (1) the species richness is higher in backyards than inside houses. We also tested whether (2) ant species composition di ers from those within residences in relation to the ones in backyards. We sampled 47 species of ants belonging to six subfamilies. Backyards had signi cantly higher species richness than within residences. is result was expected, since the backyards are heterogeneous environments and provide more resources, refuges and a better microclimatic quality, allowing a greater amount of species to coexist. is result was expected, since the backyards present vegetation (mainly Poaceae and fruit plants) and exposed soil, allowing the occurrence of species that need these resources. ese results show that knowledge of the richness and composition of the myrmecofauna living in urban areas may be fundamental for the elaboration of management, control and conservation plans of the ants. As formigas pertencem a um grupo de insetos cosmopolita e muito rico em espécies. As colônias de formigas são compostas por muitas castas, em que cada indivíduo tem sua função na colônia (exemplos, operárias, soldados e a rainha). Esta surpreendente organização em castas é a principal responsável pelo seu sucesso evolutivo e por suas adaptações em diferentes tipos de hábitat. Já foram descritas 2.000 espécies de formigas no Brasil, e quase 50 delas são adaptadas a ambientes urbanos. As formigas são consideradas pragas urbanas, principalmente porque elas transportam sicamente organismos portadores de doenças e porque elas dani cam eletrodomésticos. Nós amostramos formigas urbanas no município de Jataí -GO, localizado em uma região de Cerrado Brasileiro, no Sudoeste do Estado de Goiás. Para demonstrar melhor a mirmecofauna desta região, nós coletamos as formigas dentro de residências e nos quintas das mesmas. -This first survey of the ant fauna in a children's hospital in the city of Palmas, state of Tocantins, compares species composition, abundance and infestation rate of ants between rainy and dry seasons, day and night periods, and among 15 hospital sectors. Forty-eight collections, being 12 diurnal and 12 nocturnal in each season using five attractive baits distributed per sector, maintained for 3h per sampling. A total of 34,309 ants were collected, distributed in 12 species: Acromyrmex sp., Brachymyrmex sp., Camponotus spp. (four morphospecies), Dorymyrmex sp., Tetramorium sp., Solenopsis globularia (Creighton), Solenopsis saevissima Smith, Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius) and Paratrechina longicornis (Latreille). The hospital presented an average building infestation rate (40.3%), when compared with hospitals from other Brazilian regions. In general, there was no difference in the species composition between seasons and the period of the day, although abundance of ants was higher at night. The dry season and the nocturnal period showed the highest infestation rate, mainly by T. melanocephalum and S. globularia. Gynecologic ward, lactation unit, preconception and pediatric ward access ramp showed higher infestation rate, although these varied between seasons. The significant infestation levels by the three species above, especially in sectors with restricted access such as lactation unit, laboratory, Intensive Care Unit e surgery center, indicate potential risks for contamination of patients by multi resistant pathogens possibly present in ants' bodies, as verified in others studies.
