El género Cephalocoema Serville, 1839 (Orthoptera: Proscopiidae, Tetanorhynchini)

Abstract: -The genus Cephalocoema Serville, 1839 is revised by the study of its type-species and additional ones. New species are described and synonymies are made. Each species is studied in its morphological features and genital characters, both male and female. Type localities are marked in Biogeographical regions map, which let us to get a pattern of distribution related with the habitat preferences of each species, for the whole genus.KEY WORDS: Taxonomy, Neotropics, genitalia RESUMEN -Se revisa el género Cephaloco… Show more

“…Hence, their internal genitalia could not be analyzed. The synonyms here proposed are based on the external morphology, which exhibits almost the same characters described for Cephalocoema sica by Bentos-Pereira (2007). Some characteristics are strikingly similar, such as the shape and size of the fastigium and the subgenital plate or the prothorax coloration, with distinct and bright lateral bands on the pronotum and on the median zone of the prosternum.…”

“…The points plotted on the distribution map for this species are based on places where the holotype and paratypes were collected: Argentina, province of Formosa, Pilcomayo river (lat 25°22'0"S, long 57°39'0"W); Bolivia, department of Tarija, Samayhuate, Chaco Boreal (lat 21°48'0"S, long 62°55'0.12"W); and Paraguay, department of Presidente Hayes, Boquerón, Fortín Esteros (lat 23°47'0"S, long 61°1'0"W). Jago, 1989. The genera Cephalocoema and Tetanorhynchus have always been placed together as close groups (Bentos-Pereira 2003b, 2007Jago 1989;Mello-Leitão 1939). The species of these genera are certainly very similar in external morphology, and the limits between these groups remained unclear for a long time (Bentos-Pereira 2003b).…”
