Occurrence of Atta robusta Borgmeier (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the north of Espírito Santo State, Brazil

Abstract: Ocorrência de Atta robusta Borgmeier (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) no Norte do Espírito Santo RESUMO-Atta robusta Borgmeier foi descrita como endêmica da Baixada Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro. Show more

“…On the other hand, several species of Atta are ecologically important as seed dispersers. For example, Atta robusta is ecologically important as a key seed disperser in the restingas (coastal sand-dune habitats) of the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo (Teixeira et al, 2004;Teixeira, 2007).…”

“…Several aspects of the ecology of A. robusta have been studied (Teixeira et al, 2004;Teixeira, 2007), but there have been no previous studies of the morphology of A. robusta sensorial organs. Thus, the current study used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate comparatively the microanatomy and distribution of antennal sensilla in two different populations of A. robusta for the first time.…”

“…Because of the damage they cause to agriculture and the conspicuousness of their nests, they certainly belong to the most studied insect species of the Neotropics. Yet, despite the wealth of knowledge available on leaf-cutting ants, there is still a lack of basic information, such as on the geographic distribution of some species (Teixeira et al 2004). The species Atta cephalotes (L.) is known to have a wide and continuous distribution from Mexico to Bolivia (Kempf 1972).…”

“…Considering this and the fact that restinga represents a geologically recent environment, a low number of endemic species are expected (Freire 1990;Cerqueira 2000;Rocha 2000). However, recent studies recorded two endemic insect species (Dichotomius schiffleri, Coleoptera, and Atta robusta, Hymenoptera) which are very sensitive to habitat degradation (Teixeira et al 2004;Vieira et al 2008). They were added to the list of threatened animals in Brazil (IBAMA 2003) and although D. schiffleri has recently been recorded in other formations of the Atlantic Forest, the restinga continues to be its main habitat (Veira et al 2011).…”
