Investigation of the effect of endogenous and exogenous factors on the diet of animals is necessary for a better understanding of their feeding habits. This approach can provide relevant information on the autoecology of a species and its ecological interactions. We investigated the composition and intraspecific variation in the diet of the marsupial Gracilinanus agilis in areas of dry woodland forests (i.e., cerradão) in the Cerrado of Central Brazil, taking into consideration the availability of prey (arthropods) in the environment. We found insects, spiders, birds, and fruits in the scats of G. agilis. Insects (orders Hymenoptera, Isoptera, Hemiptera, and Coleoptera) and fruits were the most frequently consumed resources. Males fed more heavily on insects than females did, whereas during the warm-wet season (October to April), the reproductive females fed on insects more than the nonreproductive females did. On the other hand, the consumption of fruits and vertebrates did not vary between seasons, sexes, or according to female reproductive condition. Moreover, reproductive females fed more frequently on ants and beetles than nonreproductive females did. We also detected both positive (for Isoptera and Hemiptera) and negative (for Hymenoptera) selection of insects during the cool-dry season, whereas in the warm-wet season, these resources were consumed according to their availability in the environment. Our study revealed that G. agilis is an insectivore-omnivore species, but fruits also are a relevant part of its diet. This marsupial seemed to select their prey qualitatively according to its energy demands and nutritional requirements.

Soybean crop represents a large economic share in the Brazilian agricultural production. In Rio Grande do Sul (RS), with each new crop cycle there is an increase in the area under cultivation. In the lowland environment, the crop covers 5.4 million hectares, corresponding to about 20% of the State total area. Using transgenic cultivars whose main advantage is controlling target insects, as well as the reduced number of insecticide applications throughout the crop can be a viable alternative. However, the high cost of transgenic seed is considered as the main disadvantage in adopting this technology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of cultivars RR1 and RR2 in relation to the occurrence of caterpillars and stink bugs, as well as to evaluate the production cost. The experiment was set up at Embrapa Clima Temperado in the crop seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016, with conventional cultivars (BMX Potência (RR1 6.7)) and Bt isolines (BMX Ponta (IPRO 6.6)) and BMX Vanguarda (IPRO 6.0)). BMX Potência cultivar showed a higher incidence of defoliating caterpillars and Nezara viridula stinkbug, but it is the most indicated cultivar, among those evaluated, for the south lowland environment of RS, due to its yield and profitability.

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate feeding activity and superficial damage to soybean seed by the brown-winged stink bug, Edessa meditabunda (F.), and the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.). Soybean plants (cv. BRS 282), at R6 stage of development were used. Thirty pairs of each species were used individually for 48 h. Two daily observations (9:00 AM and 3:00 PM) were taken to record the number of bugs (feeding/resting) on plant parts. Harvested seeds imbibed in tetrazolium solution were photographed for measurement of the damaged surface. Adult E. meditabunda significantly preferred soybean stems (19.7 bugs) to pods (2.7). Feeding/resting was similar at 9:00 AM (mean number of 28.0 bugs) and 3:00 PM (24.3). Euschistus heros equally fed/stayed on stems (7.3 bugs) and pods (6.9), although most bugs (12.3) remained on the cage net; feeding/resting on all plant structures amounted to 13.7 bugs at 9:00 AM and 17.7 bugs at 3:00 PM. Amylase activity was greater for E. heros (41.61 ± 0.89 U/mg) and almost none for E. meditabunda (2.35 ± 0.14 U/mg). The superficial damage to seeds was significantly greater for E. meditabunda (22. 9 mm(2)) compared to E. heros (12.5 mm(2)). However, E. meditabunda caused less shrinkage of the seed tegument, while E. heros damage was deeper and seeds showed reduction in size.
