Adult diapause morph of the brown stink bug, Euschistus servus (Say) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)

Show more

“…This seasonal polyphenism has been reported in many insect species including heteropterans (e.g. the mirid Notostira elongata, the pentatomids Plautia crossota stali and Euschistus servus) (Dolling, 1973;Kotaki & Yagi, 1987;Borges et al, 2001; for a review, see . The present experiments show that changes of adult colour are gradual and controlled by photoperiodic conditions: adults remain green under long-day conditions and turn russet under short-day conditions.…”

“…Stink bug feeding for second to Þfth instars and adults was based on insertion of the stylet into the plant along with observations of feeding behavior. Color change was used as an indicator of diapause for N. viridula and E. servus adults (Harris et al 1984, Borges et al 2001. Even though color is not a completely reliable indicator of diapause (Seymour and Bowman 1994), it can be a good indication of the timing and presence of diapausing individuals in crops.…”

“…Identification of adults was based on a taxonomic key [29], and identification of nymphs was based on several years of experience rearing stink bugs in the laboratory. During reproductive diapause, the abdomen of E. servus tends to change from green to reddish brown [30], therefore reddish-brown E. servus and E. tristigmus adults captured in traps were considered to be overwintering.…”
