Show more

“…Although DEC infections are usually self-limiting, persistent diarrhea, due to EAEC and aEPEC isolates, could require nutritional therapy and treatment with antimicrobial drugs. Among the 11 antimicrobial drugs tested in our study, resistant DEC isolates were observed only for ampicillin (43.6%), cotrimoxazole (29.5%), and gentamicin (2.6%), with most of the resistant isolates pertaining to the EAEC and EPEC pathotypes ( Table 6); this is in accordance with previous studies carried out in Brazil (61)(62)(63). High levels of resistance to ampicillin and cotrimoxazole have also been found among DEC isolates from other countries of South America, such as Peru and Mexico (64,65).…”

“…27 The presence of E. coli in H 2 O or food is indicative of contamination with human or animal feces. Contamination is very common and easily spreads in H 2 O, which can contaminate food when it comes in contact, thereby promoting congenital transmission of E. coli bacteria.…”

“…26 E. coli is one of the few live microorganisms on Earth that are capable of producing all components found in basic organic compounds. 27 The presence of E. coli in H 2 O or food is indicative of contamination with human or animal feces. Contamination is very common and easily spreads in H 2 O, which can contaminate food when it comes in contact, thereby promoting congenital transmission of E. coli bacteria.…”

“…The EAEC category, identified in this study is considered an emerging pathogen and is associated with acute diarrhea in both developed and developing countries (Moura et al, 2012). They do not secrete toxins but cause chronic or persistent diarrhea.…”
