Objective: To assess dietician’s numerical parameters for school feeding and discuss limitations and possibilities for professional practice in the municipalities of Vale do Ivaí, in Northern Paraná, Brazil. Methods: This is a multiple case study. A semi-structured interview was administered to dietitians working at the School Feeding Program in nine cities located in Vale do Ivaí, Paraná, Brazil. Resolution nº 465/2010, from the Brazilian Federal Board of Dietitians, was used to calculate the adequacy of working hours of dietitians. The legistation of the Brazilian School Feeding Program was applied to discuss professional practice. Results: All the cities had at least one dietitian responsible for the School Feeding Program. The percentage of adequate working hours was from 20 to 66%. Some dietitians were involved in management activities, administration, procurement, and accounting, in addition to dietitian assignments for the School Feeding Program. Most dietitians worked in other sectors of the municipalities such as the health system, social assistance, and at events. This practice could compromise compliance of technical activities that must be met by the dietitians of the School Feeding Program. Conclusion: The number of dietitians in most of cities working at School Feeding Program is not sufficient to meet the number of students. The insuficient workload and excessive activities could hinder the development of dietitian’s private activities. The hiring of nutrition and dietitian technicians and administrative assistants for bureaucratic activies is recommended.

Perception of Nature’s Contributions to People in Rural Communities in the Eastern Amazon

Nature’s contributions to people (NCP) are increasingly being considered in decisions by policy-makers because of their relevance to the well-being of people. Learning the value of nature from the perception of communities can help to define priorities and to guide the development of public policies for environmental conservation. The objective of this study was to analyze the perception of the importance, benefits, and problems of NCP among residents of five rural communities, and their opinion about the protected areas of the municipality, considering their socioeconomic characteristics. The method consisted of conducting questionnaire-based, semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with a sample of 214 randomly selected households in five rural communities of Parauapebas (Pará, Eastern Amazon). We used appropriate statistical tests for data analysis. The main results show that the communities were highly homogeneous and that 52% of the households had low income (below a minimum wage of USD 250). A high proportion of respondents gave the highest importance to all categories of NCP (2/3 of respondents for material, 3/4 for non-material, and 4/5 for regulating NCP). The most commonly mentioned benefits of NCP referred to subsistence or livelihood and quality of life (40% of total mentions). Environmental degradation problems were the most cited (38% of total mentions). Almost all respondents stated that they had a positive opinion about the protected areas of the municipality, despite underusing them. This study is relevant because it analyses, for the first time, the perceptions of NCP among residents of rural communities in the Eastern Amazon, an essential aspect for decision-and public policy-making.

The "chakra" and plant diversity in Morraria in Mato Grosso Le «chakra» et la diversité des plantes dans Morraria dans le Mato Grosso Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever unidade de manejo "chacra" e a diversidade vegetal na região de Morraria em Mato Grosso. Foram utilizadas técnicas qualitativas de observação direta e observação participativa. Os tamanhos das "chacras" não excederam a 1,5 hectares. Os informantes identifi caram 109 espécies vegetais. As "chacras" tem as funções de ofertar trabalho aos idosos, otimização da mão de obra e de recursos fi nanceiros, alternativa de alimentação e de renda para as famílias e fonte de material genético para as roças. Palavras-chave: agricultura tradicional; diversidade agrícola; Cáceres. Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe management unit "chakra" and plant diversity in Morraria region in Mato Grosso. Qualitative techniques of direct observation and participant observation were used. The sizes of the "chakras" did not exceed 1.5 hectares. Informants identifi ed 109 plant species. The "chakras," it has the functions of job offer for the elderly, optimization of labor and fi nancial resources, alternative of food and income for families and genetic material source for the fi elds.
