Relação entre aptidão física e os indicadores de qualidade de vida de indivíduos com claudicação intermitente

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical fitness and the indicators of quality of life in individuals with intermittent claudication (IC). Forty-two subjects (65.2 ± 8.3 years) with IC of both genders participated in the study. Exercise treadmill test, to assess claudication distance (CD) and total walking distance (TWD), and one repetition maximum knee extension test were used to evaluate physical fitness. The quality of life indicators were obtained from the Medical Outcome … Show more

“…In the elderly population, age-related loss of strength and muscle mass are one factor causing a decline in gait speed (19-21). In PAD patients, a correlation between leg strength and walking capacity has been reported (2), and the changes in walking capacity with resistance training were related to changes in strength (22). Therefore, assessments of muscle strength are important for patients with PAD.…”

“…Intermittent claudication is the most common symptom of peripheral artery disease (PAD), affecting approximately 2% of the general population (1). Walking impairment has been related to quality of life (2), physical fitness and cardiovascular function in symptomatic PAD patients (3,4). In addition, pain during walking has been considered an important barrier for physical activity practice (5).…”

“…14,15,29 In fact, studies made with ambulatory measurements and subjective questionnaires to analyze physical function, observed decreasing levels of physical activity in more severe diseased patients. 14,15,29,30 This scenario of reduced physical capacity due to PAOD, increases the levels of a more sedentary lifestyle, which provokes in end a "progressive disability cycle" of physical function. 31 In this field, scientific literature has been previously documented reduced values of strength, power and endurance in patients when compared with non diseased controls.…”

“…31 In this field, scientific literature has been previously documented reduced values of strength, power and endurance in patients when compared with non diseased controls. [7][8][9]16,17,30,[32][33][34] Once muscular strength could be strongly correlated with walking capacity (most accessed measure of fitness capacity) in PAOD patients by Regensteiner et al 34 and Gerdle et al 32 interventions (resistance training) to counteract this condition has been proposed 11,12 and studied with documented positive benefits. [13][14][15][16][17] Additional to resistance training, as a beneficial exercise type prescription in non diseased population, 35 association of Cr supplementation has been studied and proposed as a more effective intervention to improvements muscular strength.…”
