Microbiologically induced deterioration of concrete: a review

Abstract: Microbiologically induced deterioration (MID) causes corrosion of concrete by producing acids (including organic and inorganic acids) that degrade concrete components and thus compromise the integrity of sewer pipelines and other structures, creating significant problems worldwide. Understanding of the fundamental corrosion process and the causal agents will help us develop an appropriate strategy to minimize the costs in repairs. This review presents how microorganisms induce the deterioration of concrete, in… Show more

“…It was noted early that aged pigeon dung contained much less ammonia (in the form of ammonium carbonate, [NH 4 ] 2 CO 3 ) (Loudon 1831). This is caused by ammonium oxidizing bacteria, which excrete nitrous (HNO 2 ) and nitric acid (HNO 3 ) (Fernandes 2006;Wei et al 2013). The bacterial action of the fermented pigeon dung with its weak acidity allows for gentle deliming of the hides, making them supple (NIIR Board of Consultants & Engineers 2011).…”

“…Algae at high concentrations are reported to accelerate concrete corrosion and damage pipeline integrity (Setareh and Javaherdashti, 2006;Jayakumar and Saravanane, 2010;Wei et al, 2013). This corrosive effect is caused either by forming tubercles and by generating organic acids, or by developing electrochemical cells (Setareh and Javaherdashti, 2006).…”

“…Despite of this, it is necessary to provide a new recycling process that permits generate an aggregate value for these kinds of wastes, which represent 16% of total solid waste produced in the world [21][22][23]. The proper management and recycling of CDW avoid that uncontrolled disposal in landfills, parks, roads separators, private lots; legal, and illegal dumps, among others [24].…”
