Candida species biofilm and Candida albicans ALS3 polymorphisms in clinical isolates

Abstract: Over the last decades, there have been important changes in the epidemiology of Candida infections. In recent years, Candida species have emerged as important causes of invasive infections mainly among immunocompromised patients. This study analyzed Candida spp. isolates and compared the frequency and biofilm production of different species among the different sources of isolation: blood, urine, vulvovaginal secretions and peritoneal dialysis fluid. Biofilm production was quantified in 327 Candida isolates obt… Show more

“…Muni et al [15] reported biofilm production in 64% of the 50 Candida isolates by Tube method. According to a study by Nascimento et al [16] 60.6% (36.4% high and 63.6% weak) were biofilm producers amongst 327 Candida isolates. Among them 43.1% of C. albicans and 75.8% of non-albicans Candida isolates were found to be positive for biofilm production.…”

“…On the other hand HWP1 expression was not detected, It could indicate that this gene is transcribed at early stages of biofilm formation [61,62]. Overexpression of ALS3 in C. albicans was observed in initial stages of biofilm formation, that maximal expression is associated with formation of germ tubes and hyphae forms [50]. Other reports suggest that ALS3 gene was expressed in hyphae and pseudohyphae phase of C. albicans but not in yeast forms.…”

“…Biofilm formation occurred most frequently in isolates of C. tropicalis, followed by C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, and C. albicans [49]. Candida non-albicans species were more prolific biofilm producers than C. albicans and that the source of isolates might influence the biofilm production [50].…”
