Occurrence and molecular characterization of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus in cucurbit crops of KPK, Pakistan

Abstract: Field survey of the cucurbit crops revealed a high incidence of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KPK), Pakistan. Among the seven districts surveyed, average percent incidence of CGMMV was recorded up to 58.1% in district Nowshera, followed by 51.1% in district Charsada, 40.5% in district Swabi and 37.3% in district Mardan. In Swat and Dir districts average incidence CGMMV was recorded upto 31.2% and 29.4%, respectively. Among the different crops highest incidence in pl… Show more

“…Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) is a member of the Tobamovirus genus in the Virgaviridae family and is an important viral pathogen of cucurbit crops worldwide 1 4 . CGMMV usually produces typical mosaic patterning on the leaves of infected plants and causes fruits deformation 5 , 6 , and ultimately results in yield reduction and considerable economic losses 1 , 7 , 8 . CGMMV was first reported from the UK in 1935 9 and has subsequently rapidly spread to several countries, including Greece 10 , Japan 11 , Korea 12 , Israel 1 , Pakistan 13 , India 14 , America 15 and Canada 16 .…”

“…The family Cucurcbitaceae includes several edible and non-edible species that are being grown across the globe particularly in tropical regions warm temperature ( Ali et al, 2014; Asad et al, 2022 ). Economically important species of the family Cucurbitaceae are cucumber ( Cucumis sativus ), bottle gourd ( Lagenaria siceraria ) , melon ( Cucumis melo L. ), sponge gourd ( Luffa acutangula ) , summer squash ( Cucurbita pepo ) , bitter gourd ( Momordica charantia ) and serpent gourd ( Cucumis melo var.…”
